Live updates: Global COVID-19 cases surpass 47.9 million

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 47.9 million globally, with over 1.2 million fatalities and more than 31.7 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University. 

Here is what we know:

The Chinese mainland reported 28 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, including eight locally-transmitted infections in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The U.S. chalked up more than 100,000 new coronavirus infections in a single day for the first time on Wednesday, bringing its total confirmed cases to over 9.4 million, with over 232,000 deaths – both the highest in the world.

The recovery of European Union economies from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to be slower than previously predicted due to the resurgence of the virus in the bloc, European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis warned on Wednesday.

The Polish government on Wednesday announced additional restrictions to staunch the spread of the virus. The country logged another 24,692 cases and 373 deaths – both new 24-hour highs since the virus broke out there in March.
