Olympic Games organizers displayed various screening measures against COVID-19 at the Big Sight convention complex in Tokyo on Wednesday in a bid to show the world that the county is ready to host the international event in 2021.

The Tokyo Olympics has been postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there is a chance that it may not happen on schedule, or at all, in 2021 if the pandemic is not brought under control by then.

"Our objective is to demonstrate what we are doing toward the safety and security of the Olympics," said Tsuyoshi Iwashita, executive director of the Tokyo Olympics security bureau.

Most of what was showcased on Wednesday – hand sanitizers, guards wearing face shields –  are already familiar to the public, although a sticker that measures one's body temperature seconds after being placed on the wrist seemed innovative.

"This time, we have tried different methods and analyzed them. I think there is no right answer, but we still have to think about what we should do. There are various [sports] competitions going on, but I think the challenge is to find out what kind of method is suitable for the world's largest sports event – the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics," said Iwashita.

It has been a while since sports events around the world came back from suspension, and many of them went well, like the Chinese Super League, the CBA and the NBA. However, having some 11,000 athletes from countries and territories worldwide compete in one city is an entirely different story, not to mention that there will be thousands of officials, judges, VIPs, volunteers, sponsors, the media and broadcasters to consider.

Tokyo organizers and the International Olympic Committee said they are testing "many scenarios." There are a lot of work on their plate but very limited time for them to finish.
