CSL: SIPG beat Shenhua 5-4 in Shanghai derby, Henan escape relegation

After a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg, the SIPG defeated Shenhua 5-4 on penalties in their Shanghai derby in the second leg of the Chinese Super League (CSL) quarterfinals in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Friday.

SIPG's Brazilian forward Hulk netted the opening goal on a penalty in the 55th minute after both sides ended their first half without a goal.

Sun Shilin of Shenhua scored an equalizer in the extra time to maintain the 1-1 draw till the extra-time penalty shoot-out when Shenhua's Colombian midfielder Giovanni Moreno missed out a kick in the fifth round against Hulk.

In another CSL game on Friday, Henan Jianye escaped relegation after holding Wuhan Zall 1-1 in their second leg play-off match in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Having won the first leg 1-0, Henan, therefore, defeated Wuhan 2-1 on aggregate.

Henan started the game aggressively and took the lead in the 24th minute from captain Wang Shangyuan's free-kick.

Wuhan remained without a goal until Jean Evrard Kouassi played in Obafemi Martins, who slotted home from inside the penalty area in stoppage time to make it 1-1.

After this victory, Henan are in a safe zone and will now compete to finish between 9th and 12th in the season, while Wuhan will still have to fight to avoid relegation in the coming matches.
