Acting President and Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov on Thursday signed a constitutional law to postpone the date of repeat parliamentary elections, his press service reported.

The report said that the need to adopt this law is dictated by a number of circumstances, as well as the current socio-political situation in the country. The date for conducting parliamentary elections will be set after the constitutional reform in accordance with the law, but no later than June 1, 2021.

The Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday claimed a repeat ballot would be held on December 20, but the parliament overturned the decision on Thursday by suspending part of the constitution that requires new elections.

The previous parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan on October 4, with a total of 16 political parties participating in the race. Preliminary results showed that four parties crossed the 7 percent threshold to enter the parliament. however, supporters of political parties that failed to win seats organized protests in Bishkek demanding the annulment of election results, claiming gross violations. The electoral authorities annulled the results of the elections on October 6.

The move comes as incumbent leader Zhaparov, 51, the recently appointed prime minister who also inherited presidential powers following former President Sooronbay Jeenbekov's resignation, has called for changes to the constitution.

Zhaparov has proposed to shrink the legislature, alter the electoral system and create a parallel people's assembly that could force fresh elections if dissatisfied with the parliament. He has also said that citizens should have the option to vote in a referendum on reverting to a presidential system from the current mixed system.

The former president Jeenbekov was the third leader to step down amid political chaos in Kyrgyzstan since independence in 1991.
