A territorial dispute threatening to spiral into a full-blown war. Armenia and Azerbaijan were both parts of the former Soviet Union. As tensions rose during the Soviet disintegration, a war broke out between the two over a mountainous region in southeast Europe, Nagorno-Karabakh.
