The American public is unaware of the problems of relying on the military. The rise of nationalism and Donald Trump came as a result of decades of interventionism using military force. And military power is no longer capable of defending the American public from new threats. The national security establishment in the U.S. hasn't fully embraced the complexity of this new environment, says Andrew Bacevich, president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and professor emeritus of international relations and history at Boston University.
