India's COVID-19 case tally passes 8 million

India on Thursday reported 49,881 new COVID-19 cases, taking its total caseload to 8,040,203, according to the country's health ministry.

Some 517 more people have died due to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, raising its official death toll to 120,527.

Still there are 603,687 active COVID-19 cases in the country, while 7,315,989 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals so far.

The Indian government has been ramping up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country. As of Wednesday, a total of 106,563,440 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the country, out of which 1,075,760 tests were conducted on Wednesday alone, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.
