A Chinese official said on Friday that it is "unrealistic" for China and the United States to decouple from each other.
Addressing questions on China-U.S. relations at a press conference to introduce the guiding principles of the fifth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Han Wenxiu, deputy director of the Office of the Central Economic and Financial Affairs Commission, stressed that peace and development remain the central themes of the era.
He said decoupling would benefit neither China nor the U.S., adding those who welcome cooperation stand for the majority.
Han expressed hope that the two largest economies in the world could work together to create a stable international environment.
China is committed to multilateralism, he added, saying the country would stick to reform, openness and innovation so as to tackle external challenges.
