Latest COVID-19 developments around the world

France recorded 35,641 new cases in a 24-hour span, raising the country's total infections to nearly 1.37 million since the beginning of the pandemic. The daily figure was notably lower than Friday's 49,215 cases, after the implementation of its second national lockdown.

Brazil registered 407 new deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 159,884. Meanwhile, 18,947 new cases were recorded, bringing the total to 5,535,605. According to a state-run research center, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, 10 out of the 27 Brazilian state capitals have recently shown an upward trend in COVID-19 cases, seven of them with a sizable increase.

Mexico reported 6,151 new cases with 464 additional fatalities over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 924,962 cases with 91,753 deaths. Due to the pandemic, Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America after Brazil, is facing a historic economic decline of nine percent for 2020.

Israel reported 721 new cases on Saturday, bringing the total to 314,422. The number of death cases rose to 2,539, with 25 new fatalities. Students from grades one to four across Israel will be allowed to return to their schools, as part of the second stage of the exit plan from the ongoing full lockdown.

South Korea recorded 124 more cases as of Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 26,635. The daily caseload hovered above 100 for the fifth consecutive day due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.
