Afghan policemen keep watch near the site of an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan November 2, 2020. /Reuters

19 people were killed and 22 others were injured when gunmen stormed Kabul University on Monday, according to Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Tareq Arian. 

The attack happened at around 11:10 a.m. local time on Monday. After detonating an explosive device at the eastern gate of the university, the militants entered the compound and started firing. 

The second blast rocked the university's northern gate at around 3:20 p.m. local time amid gunshots and rescue operations to take out all those trapped in the crossfire.

According to Tareq Arian, hundreds of students and university staff have been rescued and operations are underway to bring the situation under control.

The attack is over now and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
