Hundreds of people in the Philippines were rescued from their homes, where they had been trapped by floodwater. The Philippine Coast Guard and other government agencies helped the residents, some of whom were stranded on rooftops.

A super typhoon blew into the eastern Philippines, killing at least 10 people and triggering volcanic mudflows that engulfed about 150 houses. Typhoon Goni barreled through densely populated regions and threatened to sideswipe Manila, which had shut down its main airport, but shifted southward and spared the capital. The Philippines is lashed by about 20 typhoons and storms each year.
