Chinese mainland reports 49 new COVID-19 cases, 44 from overseas

The Chinese mainland registered 49 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday, including five cases of local transmission in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and 44 cases from overseas, China's National Health Commission announced on Tuesday. 

A total of 61 new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were recorded on the Chinese mainland on the same day and 725 asymptomatic patients remain under medical observation. No COVID-19-related deaths were reported on Monday, the commission said. 

As of Monday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 86,070 with 4,634 fatalities, while 21 COVID-19 patients were newly discharged from hospitals after recovering. 

The total confirmed infections in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and the Taiwan region are as follows: 

Hong Kong: 5,336 (5,102 recoveries, 105 deaths) 

Macao: 46 (46 recoveries) 

Taiwan: 563 (519recoveries, seven deaths)
