The UEFA European Championship (Euro 2020), which was already postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, might go through another dramatic change – this time it was about the hosts. According to French publication Le Parisien, UEFA is considering concentrating all the games of the event in Russia next year.

Originally, Euro 2020 was scheduled to happen in 12 cities of 12 countries. Despite the postponement, UEFA said the hosts will remain unchanged. However, considering that many countries in Europe are currently going through new waves of the pandemic, the European football governing body may have to think again.

Having hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018, Russia still keeps the infrastructure it takes to hold top football competitions. That's one of the major reasons behind the country being considered as a candidate for solo host. However, the fact that Russia is also suffering from rapid growth of new COVID-19 cases, just like other European countries, is not point in its favor.

UEFA refuse to give any information about any possible change to Euro 2020. Alexey Sorokin, a member of the organization's executive committee and an official involved in Russia's hosting of the World Cup in 2018, said he did not know anything about Russia preparing to host the event

"I don't know anything about this," said Sorokin to Le Parisien.

Russia Today (RT) reported that Azerbaijan was another candidate on the list. Nonetheless, considering the on-going conflict between that country and Armenia, it's unlikely for Euro 2020 to be moved to Azerbaijan.

"I wouldn't be skeptical about the possibility of holding Euro 2020 in Russia. It's quite possible," said veteran sportscaster Vasily Utkin to Russia's Ekho Sport radio station.
