China's economic transformation is unprecedented. From creating a system of responsibility in the agriculture sector to the emergence of township and village enterprises and industrialization, China has not taken the conventional road to development. State presence in key industries makes China's development package quite unique. Countries like Ethiopia and Vietnam are now attempting to use a similar approach, says Branko Milanovic, senior scholar at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality at the CUNY Graduate Center.
