Argentine football legend Diego Maradona underwent successful brain surgery for a subdural hematoma on Tuesday, and is now in recovery, confirmed Leopoldo Luque, Maradona's neurosurgeon and personal physician.

"I was able to remove the hematoma successfully and Diego tolerated the surgery very well. Diego is stable. He has a small drain (to remove fluid) that we are planning to take out tomorrow. His stay at the hospital will depend on his evolution. But the start of his recovery was great. The way he reacted after the surgery is promising," said Luque outside the Olivos Clinic in Buenos Aires, where dozens of fans were gathered.

Sixty-year-old Maradona fell in the bathroom of his house two weeks ago. He was hospitalized in the Ipensa Clinic in La Plata on Monday with anemia, dehydration, and depression. According to an MRI on Tuesday morning, Maradona had a subdural hematoma. He reportedly did not want to have a surgery but his family disagreed. In the end, Maradona was convinced by Luque that surgery was the best solution.

Having led Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup championship in 1986 while leaving so many classic moments on the field, Maradona has been seen as one of the greatest football players in history. He did not stay away from the sport after hanging up his boots in 1997. Maradona started a career as a manager and helped Argentina make the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. Before he was hospitalized this time, he was the manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata of Argentine top league Primera Division.

Maradona battled various health issues in the past 20 years. He was hospitalized with severe heart and respiratory problems related to drug addiction in 2004. Later in 2018, he was filmed passing out during the game between Argentina and Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia, and last January, he was taken to  the hospital due to internal bleeding in the stomach.
