Live updates: Global COVID-19 cases exceed 53 million; fresh outbreaks feared as several countries record spike in new cases
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 53 million globally, with over 1.3 million fatalities and more than 34.3 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.
The Chinese mainland registered 18 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, all from overseas.
More than 180,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in a single day in the U.S. for the first time on Friday, the Johns Hopkins University tally shows. The total number of infections in the U.S. now stands at 10.6 million.
Countries including Russia, Germany and Sweden also reported record daily COVID-19 cases.
Austria will likely close schools and tighten contact restrictions to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, local media said.
