Beijing: Criticism of decision to disqualify opposition lawmakers is baseless

Beijing says criticism of its decision to disqualify four opposition lawmakers from Hong Kong's legislative council is unfounded. The Chinese Foreign Ministry made the remarks today, after some countries, including the UK and Germany, hit back at the move. The decision was earlier adopted by the country's top lawmaking body, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Hong Kong's 19 opposition lawmakers on Wednesday announced they will resign en masse in support of their four disqualified colleagues. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin urged relevant people to abide by the international law and basic norms governing international relations and stop meddling in China's internal affairs, including affairs of Hong Kong. He said any attempt to put pressure on China and undermine the country's sovereignty, security and development, will not succeed.
