A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Thursday urged the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan to immediately stop political manipulation of affairs related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), saying the DPP's attempts to create chaos in Hong Kong and seek "Taiwan independence" were futile.

Zhu Fenglian, the spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, refuted irresponsible accusations by the mainland affairs authority in Taiwan over the decision by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on the qualification of the members of the HKSAR Legislative Council (LegCo).

Zhu noted the Standing Committee of the NPC adopted the decision on the qualification of members of the LegCo of the HKSAR in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Constitution, the Basic Law and the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the HKSAR.

It is a necessary step to uphold and improve the "One Country, Two Systems" framework, implement the Basic Law and the Hong Kong national security law, and maintain the rule of law and constitutional order in the HKSAR, the spokesperson said.

"It is a justified and legitimate decision that conforms to the Constitution and other laws," she added.
