Austria will implement a new lockdown from next Tuesday amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, the country's national news agency reported citing a draft regulation.

The Austria Press Agency said all non-essential shops will have to close and schools will switch to distance learning as part of the new shutdown, which is set to last until December 6.

The public will be required to stay at home at all times with some exceptions "covering the necessary basic needs of daily life," including shopping and exercising.

The Austrian government's current nighttime curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. has failed to curb infections. Daily new cases in the country hit a record of 9,586 on Friday, nine times higher than during the first wave's peak.
