7 killed, more than 10 injured in Hong Kong building fire

Seven people were killed, and more than 10 others were injured after a fire broke out in a tenement building in Hong Kong on Sunday night, the police said.

The fire, which occurred around 8 p.m. local time in a building along Canton Road, Jordan, was extinguished about two hours later.

The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) expressed deep condolences to the victims and sincere sympathy to the bereaved families and the injured in a statement.

The office will provide assistance if the HKSAR government has any needs, the statement said. 

Chief Executive of the HKSAR Carrie Lam said she was saddened by the tragedy and demanded all-out efforts to treat the injured and investigate the accident.

According to local media, the fire erupted at a birthday party inside a Nepalese restaurant, and most of the deceased were Nepalese, including at least one child.
