Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for more effective and sustainable policies to promote a steady economic recovery on Monday.

Premier Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while presiding over a symposium on the economic situation, attended by economists and entrepreneurs.

Noting that the country has made hard-won economic achievements this year despite many difficulties, Li urged regular prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic with targeted measures and stressed efforts to consolidate the upward momentum of economic recovery.

China has a strong domestic market, and it is necessary to stand firm on the strategic basis of expanding domestic demand, Li said.

Enterprises should enhance market awareness, not only adapt to economic structure and consumption upgrade trends, promote products and services to mid-to-high end, but also give play to their cost-effective advantages, Li said.

"They should pay attention to developing sinking markets, especially county and township markets, to meet the needs of a large number of grassroots and improve the quality of people's livelihood," Li stressed.
