Large amount of seaweed on Turkey coast draws attention

Updated 2020.11.17 15:27 GMT+8

The Mediterranean coast in Karsiyaka district of Turkey's Izmir Province is seeing a large amount of seaweed off the shores.

On the Bostanli coast, the view formed due to the non-poisonous seaweeds, also known as sea lettuce, drawing attention.

Although seaweed provides an important habitat for marine animals and is a food source for people, the sudden bloom of the marine algae could cause a seaweed explosion that suffocates animals and damages the ecological balance. Natural causes such as sea temperature rise, and human activities, including polluting the sea with chemicals, could lead seaweed to flourish.
