World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, seeking a record-equaling sixth ATP Finals title, had a shock 6-3 6-3 defeat against Russia's Daniil Medvedev at the season-ending championships on Wednesday.

Djokovic edged into a 3-2 lead in the first set but the 24-year-old Medvedev was relentless to pummel his high-velocity groundstrokes deep into the corners and extend baseline rallies, handing in only the fourth loss of the entire year for the Serb.

"I just had a pretty bad seven games in a row," Djokovic said, "In no time it was 6-3, 3-0. He was just better, no question about it. I struggled to find the right rhythm for 15 minutes or so. I could have and should have done better, but credit to him for playing on a high level."

"I'm sure he didn't play his best but it happens to everybody," the world No. 4, who warmed up for London by winning the Paris Masters, said.

"I always say the Big Three are champions because it happens to them less than everyone else. I'm feeling confident. I knew I had to take my chances and it was a great match for me."

While Medvedev will go into his final group match against Diego Schwartzman with no stress, Djokovic faces a straight shoot-out with Zverev to avoid an early exit.

Earlier Zverev bounced back from his defeat by Medvedev to beat Argentine debutant Schwartzman 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Leading by a set and 3-1 Zverev looked to be cruising despite some serving issues but allowed Schwartzman back before finally making his extra firepower count.

Djokovic nominated for return to ATP player council

Meanwhile, Djokovic confirmed that he had been nominated for a return to the player council after resigning in August following his decision to create a separate organization.

The 33-year-old Serb said, however, that the ATP was blocking his path to rejoin.

The 17-times Grand Slam champion caused shockwaves before the U.S. Open when he announced he was forming the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) along with Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Djokovic, who was president of the player council, was obliged to resign despite saying the PTPA was not a rival organization and that it was set up to better protect the interests of the players.
