An artistic feast has lifted its curtain on Saturday in the south China city of Shenzhen, believed to be the core fulcrum of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The "Intellective City" exhibition marks the start of Shenzhen Public Art Season, which will last until February 28, 2021.

It features artworks from 51 artists globally including British artist Damien Hirst, contemporary artist Anish Kapoor, British artist Christopher Le Brun as well as Li Xiangqun, one of China's leading contemporary sculptors, and Xu Bing.

In addition to these, the works of many outstanding young artists are also presented.

"Intellective City" is divided into two parts: "Overlapping History" and "Rebuilding the Future."

Through the interaction between audience and art, the exhibition aims to give the public the choice of information and aesthetics.

"The construction of an 'intellectual city' should focus on public feedback and public response. This intellectual construction in the field of artistic creation involves not only the relationship between artistic creation and urban development but also the integration of science and technology with art, as well as the overlapping and reconstruction between art and various disciplines," according to the exhibition committee.

The works on display show the artists' thoughts on such a modern-type city from different perspectives.

To interpret the migration and flow of cultural carriers, Li Qiang, a Chinese contemporary artist, created "Moving Mountains" for this exhibition.

By destroying magazines and books that were once the main carriers of our human culture, he stacked them into a traditional Chinese landscape painting, presenting the collapse and accumulation of traditional printing materials in the face of massive information online. 

"The Sound of Non-Sounds" by Christine Sun Kim is a mixture of graphic art, musical notation, body language and sign language. Her work is a reminder of the things that are everywhere around us but are usually ignored.

As part of Shenzhen Public Art season, the event will be open to the public free of charge.
