A red-hued canyon in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is gaining popularity among outdoor enthusiasts.
Located in Baicheng County, Aksu Prefecture, the canyon features steep rock formations in brick-red and maroon colors that create maze-like paths stretching to the mysterious ends. The peaks and ridges are carved into various peculiar shapes as a result of wind and water erosion.
After a thrill-filled, energy-consuming hike, a group of trekkers managed to get on top of the mountain by using their hands and feet to climb up the steep slopes.
"It's beautiful here. Though the journey is not easy, it gives me a sense of achievement getting up here," said Wang Shanshan from the trekking group.
"The canyon is large in scale, peculiar in shape, rich in color, and has great development value," Wu Bin, head of the local tourism bureau, said. Some additional research and planning will be conducted to make it a major tourist attraction in the county, according to Wu.
