A mountain village has eliminated poverty by developing the tea industry. Wengcao Village in Hunan was known for its high poverty level. Deep in the mountains, the village had limited land for crops, no business or factory, and no collective income up to 2018.

After a study of Wengcao's geographical and geological conditions, experts concluded the terrain there is suitable for white tea trees.

To help the village get rid of poverty, local officials helped villagers transform the barren mountain slopes into 50 hectares of tea gardens while preserving the soil and the water. The seedlings of white tea were donated by Anji County in Zhejiang Province. In one year, the villagers' per capita income reached 11,000 yuan ($1,675), and the village got rid of poverty.
