As a stopover for those who missed the last metro and a tourist attraction for visitors from abroad, capsule hotels are now struggling to attract customers amid the pandemic. In Shinjuku, a capsule hotel has been trying to overcome the crisis by offering "capsule offices" for the past month. The hotel has renovated a quarter of its 256 sleeping cabins by removing the horizontal partition that once separated two berths, creating an individual workspace that now has all the comforts of a real office. The "capsule offices" open from 9 a.m. until midnight, and can be rented for $4.8 (500 yen) per hour or $28.8 (3,000 yen) per day. If the experiment proves successful, the offer could be extended to their establishments nationwide.
