The Detroit Lions have fired their head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn, the team announced on Saturday.

Considering that the Lions lost more than half their games in the last two seasons and sit at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) North Division at the moment, it's understandable that they want to make a change.

Quinn took over the Lions in 2016 and the team went 31-43-1 in the following years. Patricia joined in 2018 and his record was 13-29-1.

"It was a hard decision because they are both terrific people and worked very hard and tirelessly for this organization. It just clearly wasn't working. It wasn't what we had hoped for when we hired them, and so I don't know if there was an exact moment. It was something that we had been thinking about for several weeks and going back and forth and deciding," said Sheila Ford Hamp, owner of the Lions.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell will be the team's interim head coach. The 50-year-old served as offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks before joining the Lions. As for Quinn's work, team president Rod Wood will share it with other front office members.

Though the Lions can theoretically still qualify for the playoffs, the fact that they lost to the Carolina Panthers and the Houston Texans, both under 50 percent this season, in the past two consecutive games, basically rules them out of playoff contention.

"Ten days ago, we looked like we had a good chance to be playoff-bound," Hamp said. "Both of those games were extremely disappointing. It just seemed like the path going forward wasn't what we wanted it to be. So, yes, we thought this was a good time to make the change."

The last time the Lions won the division title was in 1993 and the last time they won a playoff game was in 1991. Whoever is running the team in the future better be ready for a daunting task.
