China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Sunday reported 115 new COVID-19 cases, 109 of which were domestically transmitted, according to the Center for Health Protection.

In response to the city's highest single-day tally since August 2, the HKSAR announced the suspension of all kindergartens, primary and secondary schools for the rest of the year.

The measure will be implemented on Wednesday, the government said in a statement.

Kindergartens and child care centers have already been told to close due to outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections.

The HKSAR government will introduce more measures and laws if necessary to try to rid the city of the virus, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said, adding that authorities are set to impose mandatory tests on staff who work in care homes, in order to protect elderly, disabled and sick residents.
