Four days after Diego Maradona succumbed to heart failure and unleashed a wave of grief across the global, Argentine police raided the home and office of the football legend's personal physician, who is under investigation for involuntary manslaughter.

According to multiple local media outlets, about 30 police officers swooped on Leopoldo Luque's house on Sunday morning, while another 20 storming into his private clinic in Buenos Aires.

It was not yet clear what caused the sudden raid, but a justice system source told the Argentine daily La Nacion that the country's investigators deemed the searches necessary after gathering unspecific "evidence."

"If irregularities in Maradona's home medical care are confirmed, we might be looking at the crime of manslaughter," the source was quoted as saying by the La Nacion.

Maradona's family members have expressed concerns over the treatment the 1986 World Cup hero was receiving at the time of his death, Maradona's lawyer also claimed that emergency services had taken too long to arrive after being called to his client's home.

A tearful response

Late on Sunday, Luque came out to defend himself in a televised news conference, insisting he had done all he could to save the life of his "friend."

"I know what I did. I know how I did it ... I am absolutely sure that what I did the best for Diego, the best I could," he said before breaking down in tears. "I feel terrible because my friend has died, but I'm not the one who is responsible for all this."

"You want to know what I am responsible for? For having loved him, for having taken care of him, for having extended his life, for having improved it to the end," he added in an emotional outburst.

According to Clarin, the largest newspaper in Argentina, Luque revealed that there should have been a defibrillator inside Maradona's house as well as an ambulance parked outside, but that neither of those failures was his fault.

"He [Maradona] should have gone to a rehabilitation center. He didn't want to," Luque said, calling the legend "unmanageable."

Luque also told Clarin that his personal relationship with Maradona had been like "that of father and a son, a rebellious father" before making it clear that he will give testimony in front of a judge even if he was not under investigated.

Messi leads tributes

Meanwhile, major European leagues over the weekend have continued to pay tribute to Maradona, with his compatriot Lionel Messi providing the most touching moment.

The Barcelona superstar, who has long seen as the heir to Maradona's throne as the king of Argentine, scored a beautiful goal during his team's 4-0 home win over Osasuna.

Right after the wonder strike, the emotional Messi lifted his shirt to reveal a replica kit of his hometown club Newell's Old Boys bearing the number 10 which Maradona wore during his brief spell at the Rosario side in 1993.

"It was a great moment," said coach Ronald Koeman in post-game briefing. "Leo's goal, his gesture dedicated to Maradona. "It was something very big. We Europeans don't realize how big Maradona is in Argentina."

"We didn't know what Messi had prepared in tribute to Maradona, it was a beautiful surprise," said Antoine Griezmann, who also scored a marvelous volley in the game.

"Maradona deserved an emotional tribute like that, we have lost a global idol," Barca midfielder Philippe Coutinho added. "Everyone in football admired him and we'll all miss him."
