The first set of gold and silver commemorative coins for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics went on sale on Tuesday.

The set of nine coins unveiled in Beijing includes three gold coins, five silver coins, and one gold-and-silver coin – the first of its kind to be issued among sports-themed commemorative coins. The coins have different values ranging from 5 yuan ($0.76) to 2,000 yuan ($305). 

The coins all feature on one side the logo of the 24th Winter Olympic Games, surrounded by snowflakes, and the Great Wall, one of China's best knwon landmarks.

The reverse side differs however and includes variously Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the 24th Winter Olympic Games; the National Stadium (Bird's Nest), the National Aquatics Center (Water Cube); as well as winter sports, such as short-track speed skating, figure skating and freestyle skiing.

He Jianghai, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games said that these commemorative coins were an important part of preparations for the Beijing Olympics, and will help spread the Olympic spirit, demonstrate Olympic and Chinese traditional culture, as well as promote exchanges and mutual learning between China and other civilizations across the world.
