China's higher education enrollment rate has been continuously increasing, from 40.0 percent in 2015 to 51.6 percent in 2019, and the total number of students in school reached 40.02 million, Wu Yan, director of the Department of Higher Education of the country's Ministry of Education, said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the 35th anniversary of China's postdoctoral system's implementation was Jointly held by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the National Postdoctoral Management Committee. According to its report, China currently has 3,318 postdoctoral research stations and 3,850 postdoctoral research workstations.

"China has recruited more than 250,000 postdocs, 150,000 of them ended their postdoctoral work, and 125 of them have become academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering."

After 35 years of development, the report said China's postdoctoral system has grown from scratch and has become an important system for cultivating high-level innovative young talents with Chinese characteristics.

In the past five years, postdocs have undertaken 90,000 national-level projects, 80,000 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and 120,000 other types of projects, it stated.

"On average, each post-doctorate has undertaken more than two research projects", it said.

"The postdoctoral team has gradually grown and played an important role in promoting technological innovation, serving economic and social development, and helping to fight poverty", an organizer of the anniversary meeting from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said.
