The Henan Museum, the provincial museum of central China's Henan Province, is giving visitors a taste of what it is like to unearth archaeological treasures with blind boxes containing replicas of cultural relics, such as bronzes and jade wares. /CFP
The blind boxes come in six sizes, and the minimum price is 40 yuan. Buyers of the largest boxes also receive a Luoyang shovel, a tool often used in archaeological excavations in China. Like archaeologists, they do not know what is encased in the boxes until they dig unearth it. /CFP
The blind boxes are so popular that 5,000 of them sold for more than 500,000 yuan (about $76,591) in five days after a post about them was shared on Chinese online community platform Douban on December 1, 2020. With all available blind boxes sold out, anyone wishing to buy will have to wait for 10 to 20 days. /CFP
In recent years, cultural products at museums have increased in popularity among young people in China. Several museums in China have launched blind boxes with their own features, including the Shaanxi History Museum, the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan Province and the Henan Museum. /CFP
