Borussia Dortmund of Bundesliga fired their manager Lucien Favre, announced the team on Sunday.

"Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Lucien Favre. The club would like to thank Lucien for his dedication and wish him success in his future," tweeted the German club.

"We are all grateful to Lucien Favre for his excellent work over the past two-and-a-half-year, in which he and his team won two runner-up championships. As a professional and as a person, Lucien Favre is beyond any doubt," said Dortmund's chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement.

Though Dortmund did not specify, many were convinced that the team's humiliating 5-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart at home on Saturday became the last straw that breaks the camel's back.

"It was a disaster. It was bad. We weren't good at winning the ball. We made too many big mistakes. It's hard to explain. If you're not good at winning the ball, and I mean the whole team, then you have a problem. Stuttgart played well, but we were very, very poor. You can't get away with that," said Favre after the loss.

However, Dortmund did not sack their manager because of loss, no matter how painful it is. Having played 11 games, the Black and Yellows only ranked fifth with a 6-1-4 record in Bundesliga. When the manager has a squad made up of Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, and Axel Witsel, the club expected a lot better of his work.

"It is very difficult to take this step. But we believe because of the negative developments lately that there is a need to act," said Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc.

Edin Terzic, Otto Addo, and Sebastian Geppert will take over from Favre until the end of this season.

Though they have been struggling in the domestic league, Dortmund did well in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League as they beat Lazio to top Group F. The draw for a knockout schedule is happening on Monday.
