The World Health Organization (WHO ) and partners said Friday that the COVAX facility, created to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, expected to begin delivering jabs early next year.

Announcing the agency had secured nearly two billion doses of several promising vaccine candidates, COVAX said in a statement that this would "enable all participating economies to have access to doses in the first half of 2021, with first deliveries anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2021."

The Facility currently has 190 participating economies, including 92 low- and middle-income economies.

It said the first rollout next year will be delivered to all participating economies who have requested doses in this timeframe.

"All deliveries are contingent upon several factors, such as regulatory approvals and country readiness," according to the statement.

"The arrival of vaccines is giving all of us a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. "But we will only truly end the pandemic if we end it everywhere at the same time, which means it's essential to vaccinate some people in all countries, rather than all people in some countries."
