The Chinese mainland on Thursday recorded 12 new COVID-19 cases, one locally-transmitted and 11 from overseas, the National Health Commission announced on Friday. 

The single local infection was reported in southwest China's Sichuan Province, health officials said.

Eleven new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were also recorded, while 198 asymptomatic patients remain under medical observation.  

No COVID-19 deaths were reported on Thursday. Meanwhile, nine patients were discharged from hospitals. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 86,789, with 4,634 deaths.

The total confirmed infections in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and the Taiwan region are as follows:  

Hong Kong: 7,899 (6,534 recoveries, 125 deaths)  

Macao: 46 (46 recoveries)  

Taiwan: 757 (616 recoveries, 7 deaths)
