UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced new tier-four restrictions for London, the southeast and east of England in the government's latest effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. /VCG

Under tier-four restrictions, residents must stay at home, non-essential shops and leisure and entertainment venues must close, and people are urged to work from home if they can. /VCG

Tier-four residents are not allowed to mix indoors with anyone not from their household, stay overnight away from home, or travel abroad, leaving many Christmas plans in tatters. /VCG

People in tiers one to three will only be allowed to mix on December 25, replacing the government's previous plan to allow celebrations from December 23 to 27. /VCG
