The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 18 million on Monday, Johns Hopkins University's tally showed.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 18,011,449, with a total of 319,270 deaths, as of 8:38 p.m. EST, according to the university's data.

California reported the most cases, standing at 1,908,924, followed by Texas with 1,603,525 cases and Florida with 1,212,581. Illinois registered 905,069 cases, and New York identified another 857,049.

Other states with over 500,000 cases include Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Michigan, the university's tally showed.

The U.S. has approved two COVID-19 vaccines, one developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and the other by Moderna, for emergency use. Vice President Mike Pence and President-elect Joe Biden have received their first doses on live TV to boost confidence in the vaccines.

U.S. Congress on Sunday struck a deal on a $900 billion COVID-19 relief package after months of failed negotiations and is working towards passing the deal on Monday night.
