There are different kinds of social hierarchies that are helpful to China’s response to COVID-19. One of them is the respect that ordinary people have for Junzi or exemplary persons which in the context of the pandemic are "scientists with a conscience." The other is political meritocracy, where capable public officials have a mission of dealing with COVID and delivered it well.
