Twenty-one photos were spotted in the office where Chinese President Xi Jinping gave his 2021 New Year address. Some of them were seen for the first time. Here, we take a look at the stories behind the pictures.

1. Xi visits Tengchong City, southwest China's Yunnan Province

President Xi Jinping walked out of a village with bevy of inhabitants singing a local song to wave him goodbye in Tengchong City, southwest China's Yunnan Province on January 19, 2020. It was one of the stops during Xi's inspection tour of the province. 

2. Xi visits a border military camp in Yunnan

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited soldiers and officers stationed at a border camp in Yunnan Province on January 19, 2020. When visiting the soldiers' dormitory, Xi asked the soldiers how they felt about their work and life there.

3. Xi visits Beijing Ditan Hospital

President Xi went to see how the COVID-19 patients were treated at Beijing Ditan Hospital in Beijing on February 10, 2020.

In this photo, Xi made a fist to encourage all medical workers nationwide to build confidence and to believe that the COVID-19 will be defeated.

4. Xi visits Wuhan City, central China's Hubei Province

President Xi paid a visit to Wuhan City, central China's Hubei Province, which was under a lockdown to fight the COVID-19. In this photo, Xi asked about the supply and procurement of the living necessities, including rice, noodles, cooking oil, vegetables and fruits at a distribution center during his visit to a community in Wuhan City on March 10, 2020.

Xi said the local government should try their best to guarantee a basic living for residents.

5. Xi visits Pingli County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province

President Xi visited a tea plantation in Pingli County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province on April 21, 2020. He talked with the tea growers and told them to achieve better development of the tea industry.

The tea plantation belongs to a cooperation program centering on poverty alleviation between east China's Jiangsu Province and Shaanxi Province.

6. Xi visits a national nature reserve in Shaanxi

President Xi visited Niubeiliang National Nature Reserve in the eastern Qinling Mountains on April 20, 2020 to learn the situation of environmental protection in Qinling Mountains.

During the visit, Xi stressed that the illegal construction projects in the Qinling Mountains was a big lesson that needs learning. He called on officials in Shaanxi Province to be guards of the ecology in Qinling Mountains.

7. Xi visits Taiyuan City, north China's Shanxi Province

President Xi visited a production department at Taiyuan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd in Taiyuan City, north China's Shanxi Province on May 12, 2020.

During the visit, Xi encouraged the company to continue its scientific and technological innovation efforts and make big strides in supporting the development of advanced manufacture after getting a knowledge of the resumption of work in the company.

8. Xi visits Hefei City, east China's Anhui Province

President Xi met soldiers, officers, and personnel at the frontline of the flood control on Chaohu Dam in Hefei City, east China's Anhui Province on August 19, 2020.

Xi expressed sincere greetings to people who devoted themselves to flood control in the country.

9. Xi pledges allegiance to China's Constitution

President Xi took a solemn oath to the Constitution of the People's Republic of China (PRC) at the first session of the 13th National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on March 17, 2018.

The photo was on Xi's bookshelf in his 2019 New Year address.

This was the first time China's top leader taking the oath to the country's Constitution since the founding of the PRC on October 1, 1949.

10. Xi visits revolutionary historical site of CPC

President Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to review the oath of the CPC when visiting the site where the first CPC National Congress was held in 1921, in east China's Shanghai on October 31, 2017.

The photo has been on Xi's bookshelf since his 2018 New Year address.

11. Xi poses with his father in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province

This photo was first put on President Xi's bookshelf in the 2021 New Year address. In this photo, Xi posed with his father in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province, in 1979. At that time, Xi studied at Tsinghua University and often visited his father during holidays.

12. Xi and his wife pose with his mother

This photo also made a debut on President Xi's bookshelf at the 2021 New Year address. In this photo, Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan supported Xi's mother Qi Xin from both sides.

At a New Year's greeting party in 2015, Xi recited a traditional Chinese poem titled Song of the Parting Son. Xi said that the poem expressed Chinese people's deep emotion toward family.

13. Debut of Xi's single photo when he was young

This photo also made a debut on President Xi's bookshelf at the 2021 New Year address. In this photo, Xi, at a young age, smiled at the camera.

14. Xi poses with his wife Peng Liyuan in Old Summer Palace

This photo also made a debut on President Xi's bookshelf at the 2021 New Year address. In this picture, Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan posed before the Great Fountain (Dashuifa), one of the best-known sites at the ruins of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing.

15. The father and daughter

Xi took his daughter on a bicycle ride when he worked in Fuzhou City, east China's Fujian Province. This photo has been on Xi's bookshelf since he delivered his first New Year address in 2013.
