UK PM Boris Johnson announces new lockdown to slow virus

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on January 4 a new national lockdown for England until mid-February to combat a fast-spreading new variant of the coronavirus. Johnson also said that in order to stop the spread of the disease, schools and colleges across England will move to remote provision. As of January 4, there were 26,626 COVID-19 patients in hospitals in England, an increase of more than 30 percent from a week ago.
