The U.S. Capitol Police on Thursday confirmed the death of one of its officers who was wounded during Wednesday's riots.
"At approximately 9:30 p.m. this evening (January 7, 2021), United States Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty," the Capitol Police said.
The police officer is the fifth person to die following Wednesday's riots at the Capitol.
Sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters, the Capitol Police said in a statement. "He returned to his division office and collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," the statement read.
Sicknick's death is being investigated by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department's homicide branch, the Capitol Police and their federal partners.
