Over 68% of rural bathrooms in China have been upgraded, says official

The environment in rural areas of China has improved significantly over the past five years due to the nationwide toilet revolution and garbage disposal campaign, according to China's rural authority on Wednesday.

The announcement was made during a press conference by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to brief reporters on the ministry's work from 2016 to 2020 in terms of promoting rural development.

Zeng Yande, director of the ministry's planning department, said that so far nationwide, over 68 percent of rural bathrooms have been upgraded, while over 90 percent of the administrative villages are equipped with domestic waste disposal facilities.

Documents released by the government show that the central government allocated 7 billion yuan (about $1.08 billion) and 7.4 billion yuan ($1.15 billion) respectively in the flush toilet campaign in 2019 and 2020, in addition to local spending.
