One person was killed and 11 were injured after separate shootings early on Sunday morning at a strip mall and outside an after-hours dance hall in Phoenix, Arizona, local police said.

Five people were shot in the first incident, which occurred near 23rd and Northern avenues in the U.S. city just after 3 a.m. local time, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Police said preliminary information indicated the men were in a fight and exchanged gunfire.

Roughly two hours later, one person was killed at the scene and six more were wounded in a second shooting at 24th Street and University Drive. Two of the victims were transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Phoenix police said the multiple shooters have not yet been arrested or identified.

It's still unclear if the two shootings were connected. They occurred at scenes roughly 21 kilometers apart.
