On January 17, nurse Monica Calazans became the first person in Brazil to receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese biotech firm Sinovac. 54-year-old Calazans has diabetes and is considered to be at high-risk from the coronavirus. Earlier that day, the Brazilian health regulator approved the urgent use of coronavirus vaccines made by Sinovac and AstraZeneca.
