China's new high-speed railway that runs in extreme cold temperatures

China launched a new high-speed railway service that connects Beijing with Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, the country's northernmost and coldest regions, January 22, 2021. /VCG

The 1,198-kilometer-long line will cut travel time between Beijing and Harbin to less than five hours when traveling at the maximum speed of 350 km/h. /VCG

Earlier in January, China unveiled a high-speed Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) that can operate in extremely cold temperatures. /VCG

Expected to run on the new high-speed railway, the new train can operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius. /VCG
