The U.S. state of Minnesota confirmed its first case of a new COVID-19 variant that was initially discovered in Brazil, the Minnesota Department of Health said in a statement on Monday. 

The variant was found in a specimen from a Minnesota resident with recent travel history to Brazil, the health department said, noting that the variant is thought to be more transmissible than the initial strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 disease.
