China said its cooperation with the U.S. is not "flowers in the greenhouse," it is closely related to the development of bilateral ties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters on Thursday.

Zhao made the comments after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for bilateral cooperation in climate change while admitting the two countries have deep differences in other areas.

In response to Blinken's statement, Zhao said he hopes the U.S. meets the Chinese side halfway and creates favorable conditions for coordination and cooperation between the two countries in major areas.

Acknowledging that climate change is a common challenge for mankind that cannot be tackled by any county alone, Zhao said the two countries, both played constructive roles in the signing and implementing of the Paris Agreement, share a common interest and broad space for cooperation in the field of climate change.

But meanwhile, the Chinese spokesperson also stressed that cooperation in specific areas between the two countries is closely related to the general trend of the bilateral relationship.

One should not expect to cooperate with China while interfering in China's internal affairs and harming China's interests at the same time, Zhao stated, hoping the U.S. side could prudently handle matters related to China's core interests.

The U.S. side was accused of repeatedly interfering in the South China Sea and Taiwan-related issues. U.S. anti-China politicians were lashed out earlier for colluding with Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in an attempt to undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

Zhao called for mutual understanding from the U.S. side and urged the U.S. to create favorable conditions for coordination and cooperation between the two countries in major areas.
