The Japanese government is set to decide on Tuesday to extend its state of emergency over COVID-19, which was set to end on February 7, to March 7, NHK reported on Monday.

According to NHK, the Japanese government decided to lift the state of emergency only in Tochigi Prefecture and extend it by a month in 10 prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka. 

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga first declared the state of emergency for Tokyo and three surrounding prefectures on January 7 before expanding it to cover a total of 11 prefectures hard hit by the novel coronavirus.

Japan on Monday reported 1,792 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the nation's total tally of cases to 392,475. The country's death toll has now risen to a total of 5,846 people, according to the latest statistics Monday evening.
