Chinese star Wu Dajing stunned the skating world by breaking the world record twice in the men's 500m Short Track event and winning the only gold medal for Team China at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018.

It also marked a breakthrough for China: it was the country's first gold medal in a men's individual ice sport at the Olympics.

On that occasion, the 26-year-old set a world record time of 39.584 seconds, beating formidable rival Hwang Dae-heon from South Korea.

Wu, the Sochi 2014 silver medalist, clocked 39.8 seconds in the quarterfinal, 0.137 off the previous record set by American John Celski in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 2012. Wu became only the second person in history to skate the discipline in under 40 seconds.

At the ISU Word Cup Short Track in Salt Lake City in November 2018, Wu finished first in 39.505 seconds and beat his own world record in the process.

Wu, from northeast China's Jilin Province, started skating at the age of 10 in 2004 and entered China's national team in 2010.

In 2013, Wu won silver in the men's 500m at the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating event in Sochi.

In 2014, he grabbed a bronze medal in the men's 5000m relay at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Later, he bagged a gold in the men's 500m at the 2014 ISU World Championships in Montreal, Canada.

In the same year, Wu was presented with the May 4 Youth Medal, the highest honor for young people in China.

In 2015, he successfully defended the men's 500m championship at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

In 2017, at the eighth Asian Winter Games, he won gold in the men's 5000m relay and men's 500m. He also grabbed silver in the men's 1500m.

Later that year, he also won gold in the men's 500m and men's 1000m at the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating event in Shanghai.

He is now concentrating on preparation for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing next year, with the aim of defending his gold medal, but is not in his best form.

At the just concluded China National Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Tianjin in January 2021, Wu was beaten by 20-year-old rookie Yu Songnan and took a silver in the 500m race.

Though middle and long distances are not Wu's specialty, he managed to prove his capability by taking gold in the 1500m event and bronze in the 1000m.
